港中大(深圳)校長徐揚生教授在2023年度入學典禮上的講話原文

Dear entering students, families,colleagues and friends,　　

Good morning! A big welcome to all forsharing with us this glorious day. My special welcome goes to our new students.They are 1435 domestic undergraduate students from 23 provinces and cities, 120international students from 11 countries and regions, and 1943 postgraduatestudents in 37 programs. Today we are proud to recognize you as part of theCUHK-Shenzhen community, and we can’t wait to see each of you shine and growand transform this place in the years to come. You are beginning a new stage oflife, and I hope you are ready.

同學們， 2023級是非常特別的一屆，你們是這所大學“黃埔十期”的學子，你們來到這所學校，將見證這所大學邁入她輝煌的第十年，你們將見證和分享這所大學建校十年的成果與喜悅，同時也將和這所大學一起再度起航，以青春和夢想開啟下一個十年的新紀元。

同學們，十年前，這里是一片荒蕪的草地和幾幢廢舊廠房，第一屆經管學院的286名學生就是從那個小小的、簡陋的校園中出發，走向了世界!我們首屆“黃埔一期”學子們的信念與志氣已彰顯了這所大學精神上的不平凡。我記得我們第一屆學生的開學典禮是在一個由廢棄的倉庫改建的禮堂里舉行的，那里我們叫它“禮文樓”，今天我們走進了嶄新的 “禮文堂”，從禮文樓到禮文堂，我們走了整整十年的時光，這十年里，我們從不到300名學生，到今天的一萬多名學子，我們建立了6所學院和7所書院，今年，我們的二期校園已經全部落成，大學的厚含書院和第七書院都迎來了第一批新生，大學醫學院和音樂學院的校址也在緊鑼密鼓地建設中……

看著這所大學變得更加美麗、更加壯大，我要感謝深港兩地政府、大學理事會以及社會各界對學校辦學的大力支持，同時也要感謝我們的家長和同學對大學的支持與熱愛!是你們的信任和支持成就了這所大學的飛速成長與發展，也是你們的信任與支持令我們更感責任重大?！　?/p>

Students, the education you are going toreceive here will be exciting as well as challenging, and if well spent, it islife-transforming. You will come close to minds of intellectual strengths thatyou have not met with before. You will quest for truth, discover new interest,and establish new relationship with the world. You will make friends who willbecome a life-time treasure in the rest of your life. You will have yourexisting opinions and ways of thinking contradicted and challenged as they havenever been.　　

At university I foresee you will have alot of fun. But that’s not the whole story. Discomfiture, frustration, achesand pains, too, will surely be part of your education here. And this relates tomy point here, that is, do not let negative feelings and pains weigh you down,but look at them as opportunities for change and growth.　　

Experiences of negative emotions are notnecessarily bad things. It’s alright to accept the fact that you’re upset. It’sokay to make room for such feelings at the moment, but do not feed on them andlet them get the better of you. Negative emotions themselves are temporary andfeeling them do not define who you are. It is how you react to them that reallydefines who you are. Let anger at injustice ward us away from doing injusticeto others. Let fear caution us against submitting to temptations that givepleasure for a moment but cause lasting shame and regret. Let sorrow and pityteach us the width and depth of humanity. Let mortification promptself-introspection, and change for the better. Tribulation producesperseverance; frustration and disappointment have value in the process of ourgrowth.

同學們，成長是你們在這所大學，乃至未來的人生中所要面對的最重要的課題，而我今天想要提醒大家，去正視和接納成長過程中那些令你不太舒服的時刻，正是這種不舒服的感覺，恰恰證明了你的成長，就像竹子拔節、蝴蝶羽化，成長是一種蛻變的過程，意味著你要告別或改變過去的一些習性，接納和建立一些全新的自我，擺脫慣性，突破常規，總是令人不舒服的，何況還常常遇到困難、挫折與挑戰，然而只有經歷過改變之中的陣痛，才會獲得化繭成蝶的新生，就像紅軍的長征，正是經歷了艱苦的長征，紅軍才能于生死存亡的關頭完成蛻變，積蓄力量，為最終的勝利奠定了基礎。所以，同學們，“不舒服”就是成長，成長就是不舒服，舒舒服服是不可能成長的，在我們年輕、可以奮斗的年齡，不要去選擇舒適與安逸。人與樹是一樣的，越長得高，越向往高處的陽光，樹的根就越要伸向黑暗的地底。人成長得越快，成就越大，所遇到的挑戰與磨難就越大。這是我想與大家分享的第一點。

同學們，我想和大家分享的第二點，是希望大家在大學期間要學習如何做人、做事，我校的校訓“博文約禮”出自《論語·雍也篇》，是對君子為學做人的要求，那么接下來我想分享幾點做人做事的法則，希望對大家今后的學習生活有所裨益。

首先，遇大事要靜?！懊颗R大事有靜氣”，遇到大事切莫心慌意亂，要沉著冷靜，“靜能生百慧”，只要靜下心來，自然會找到應對之法，心有多靜，福有多深，我所遇到的有成就的科學家或學者都是心很靜的人。

第二，遇急事要緩。遇到急事，不要慌張，很多錯誤都是因為心急造成的，世界上任何事情都是可以緩一緩的，趕不上飛機，也還有下一班明天的航班。心緩即清，要做到事急心不急，事煩心不煩。

第三，遇難事要變。遇到難事時要懂得變通，要敢于以新視角、新方法、創造性地解決問題，注意變通的難點不是方法和技術，而是勇氣，你要有重新選擇方向、從不隨波逐流的勇氣。

最后，遇順事要斂。處在順境之中，切勿張揚自喜，應該收斂身心，謙遜低調，時時反躬自省，不要將一時的成功全部歸功于自己的努力，心里要充滿感恩。

同學們，今天是你大學四年生活的起點，四年時間其實很短，總共只有1460天，我希望你能在這里度過真正有價值的1460天，而不是僅僅生活了一天，卻重復了1460次?！　?/p>

Dear entering students, today you are ata fresh beginning, one that leads to many opportunities, experiences, endeavorsand explorations. I hope you will use your opportunity wisely, react tofrustrations resiliently, and devote yourselves to earnest learning. I hope youwill inspire one another and treat each other kindly. I hope during your timeat CUHK-Shenzhen, you will seek out the best about this place, and at the sametime, seek out the best of yourselves.
